Cradle Will Rock keeps kids hip with unique threads

Lexington, KY - Across the country in Orange County, Calif., Rhonda Smith had established herself as a well-respected children’s clothing designer at her boutique, Cradle Will Rock. The first outfit she ever made was featured on the cover of US Weekly, and the store was frequented by celebrities. MTV even brought in cameras one day to take a tour of the boutique. Yet despite Smith’s incredible success, when she took a two-week vacation to the Bluegrass, she felt like she was home. “I fell in love with Kentucky,” she said. “When I got on the plane to go back, I felt like crying because I loved it here.”

Upon her return home, Smith made the decision to pack up the profitable business and move it with her youngest son, Christian, to Lexington. “I thought it was a good idea to raise Christian here because it’s all-American and it’s different,” she said. “It’s quaint, and everyone knows everyone. It’s a community.”

Swapping her boutique’s bustling California location in favor of a healthy community environment in Lexington was not the first major life decision made with her son in mind. In fact, Christian was the inspiration for Cradle Will Rock nearly 11 years ago. “When Christian was a week old, I was strolling down a main street [in California] and there was a place for rent,” she said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to open a baby store. I’m going to take my baby to work with me,’ and that is how it all began.”

In June 2009, Smith opened her Kentucky location in Victorian Square, but after 15 months, she decided to relocate into Chevy Chase, where sales have picked up and Smith can walk to work.

While the boutique has relocated across the country from its original storefront, its fundamental concept is the same: to provide hip, handmade and often one-of-a-kind clothes for kids.

Smith’s innovation and natural talent for design can be seen in all of her clothing. She began her career with only a couple of sewing classes under her belt, yet she made her first piece without even the help of a pattern, merely envisioning a vintage pillowcase as a dress and pulling out her scissors. Now her craft begins by visiting Lexington’s several antique stores, where she said she “always scores” with items like Chenille bedspreads, vintage hankies, tablecloths and blankets, all of which inspire and inform her designs. Back in the shop, she cuts and sews on a table pulled into the middle of her store, welcoming customers when they enter. She sells everything from clothes for babies and young girls and boys to baby essentials, like washcloths, breastfeeding covers, blankets and silk-screen-printed onesies.

Perhaps even more impressive than Smith’s innate vision for fashion and goal to provide handmade, hip clothing is her strong commitment to support local artists. Smith makes space in her store to feature customizable jockey silk paintings by Jamie Givens, a local painter and designer who also created the boutique’s eye-catching wall murals. The back wall of the store is covered in artwork for sale by William Brown, an artist with One World Art Collective, which assists in the professional artistic development of adults who have been diagnosed with a cognitive disability.

With the reception the business has received in Chevy Chase, Smith has dreams of expanding the boutique to other locations and eventually franchising. A large part of this expansion plan is centered on her desire to preserve the lost art of sewing. She hopes to employ college students, stay-at-home moms and grandmothers who want part-time work making clothes. “I don’t need to take it to a manufacturer in L.A. and get pennies on the dollar,” she said. “I’m not doing that. I’m trying to say, ‘Hey, who wants to sew and help me make kids’ clothes?’”

Though the store operates with the same goals and values as when it was first opened, Smith has noticed a difference in her Kentucky and California clientele that extends beyond celebrity. In Lexington, Smith said, “little girls are little girls. They dress and act like little ladies.” Smith said she likes that compared to Los Angeles, mothers here prefer traditional clothes for their children. This has lead Smith to design more pieces with embroidered initials, polka dots and ruffles. “I love traditional, but I’m trying to put a funkier twist on traditional,” she said.

Smith’s transition to Kentucky has been made easier by her new family of Lexington supporters. Smith showed off a card that a little girl had recently drawn for her of a Cradle Will Rock original dress that her mom had purchased. “I don’t even know these people; these are customers that come in that I’ve just met,” Smith said. “This is a little girl that just loved my tank dresses, and thought they were cool. This,” she said, holding up the card, “this is cool.”

I have always been a person who rocks my own personal style. I created this store because I didn't like retail choices for my young son's attire. That is what created the idea of having a baby store! So with an idea and a dream I opened Cradle Will Rock.

I believe it is a dream when I wear something that I know no one else will have. I do not mass produce but I do create some similar looks. These are a few of the ideas that have been translated into clothing for your little loves.

So first things first: I must apologize again for being so tardy on my posts. It has just been a crazy time. With opening a new store, working on new product lines, getting used the the winter weather and the commute with snow and rainfall... I have been slacking! There it is, the truth is out and I have admitted I have slacked on my blog! So so sorry!

I have been busy in the new store and meeting so many new people! I love Chevy Chase and the new location. You know, I am right next door to Mon Tea.

I have been drinking green tea every day since I moved in the new location. Secret revealed! I haven't felt better! I have been feeling bad for some time, but since I moved to the new location and with the help of my neighbor... I have been drinking Green Tea! I really think its helped! You should come get some and stop by and say "hi"! We can drink and get healthy together! If you aren't in Lexington, you can buy it online. There is rain today and it is expected through the night.

Tomorrow we are told we will have some snow. The best part is that my store is right next to Mon Tea and you can grab yourself a cup to warm up. But Enough! Spring just get here soon, I am ready! Monday is the first day we will see some sunshine according to newscasts!

This is a note to all the Mommies out there reading my blog. My girlfriends mother called her the other day and said, I'm having a Christmas Tea party (for the little ones), please come! She said when her mom called she "had magic in her voice"! The magic that she remembered when she was a little girl!

This is what her Mom did for her grandkids, a Christmas Tea (which happily included Hot Chocolate for sipping)

If you were wondering why I haven't posted to my blog as often as I normally do, you will know that I have been busy.

First, I had to prepare for the World Equestrian Games. I was sewing like mad and getting supplies ready for the onslaught called "The Games". I have never seen anything like it! A very cool event that brings all the countries right here to Lexington. The Olympics, just for horse events. LOVE!

The other is that as you all know, I bought a new house. That has been keeping me busy when I am not at the store.

Well to add to that, I have a new secret! Yes... a new big surprise and secret!
I will reveal it soon.

I would love to have everyone be this cute. I have a few postings to catch up on. I've been sewing like mad. The World Equestrian Games are nearly here. Lots of people will be here. Could just about wrap up the year with a good showing! The games are from 9/25 to 10/10.

I know many of you have been asking me about my boys inventory. I will tell you a secret. My store in Seal Beach was saturated with boys apparel. I pined and whined for more girl wear. The reason I opened my store was because I had boys! I wanted them to have cool clothes.

I never had a girl and that is probably why I spend so much time making girls clothes now. I love girly girl wear! So here are some pictures of my boy wear.

If you are like me you will think this is funny. Why do they call it Oktoberfest and have it in September? I dunno... just me! I think it is funny!

Come enjoy the sites and sounds of the picturesque Mainstrasse while enjoying Covington's 31th Annual Oktoberfest. This great Cincinnati tradition, rated one of the "Top 20 Festivals for September 2009" by the Southeast Tourism Society, boasts an assortment of international cuisine, and ice cold beverages to wash it all down.

Four stages for live music and a variety of arts and crafts provide all the makings for a great way to unwind for the weekend.

Hi Everyone,

Yes, I have returned.
Yes, I know I have been MIA on my blog.
Yes, I have been busy ever since I returned.
To those of you who guessed... My husband and I got a house in Kentucky! I believe you can now say we are planted here in the Blue Grass State! We still have our California home... but this is home sweet home!

The vacation was great! I still don't have my photos to show you. I can tell you a certain Children's Clothing Store Owner jumped from a 30 foot cliff straight into the river water... with the fear of a baby bird's first flight out of the nest! I jumped after such a long time... I thought my husband would drown treading water waiting... and waiting... and waiting.... for me to take the jump! That is why I did it! I couldn't have him drown waiting for me!

On another note...

I Have Returned!

Hi Everyone...

I have missed you. I can't say horribly but yet... I have missed you. Being on vacation was a much needed time away from work and life in general. I was able to catch up on some much needed REST AND RELAXATION! I was able to reconnect with my honey. We are both working crazy hours. It was nice to spend family time being a family and doing something fun for a change.

My big secret reveal has been guessed by a few of you! You answered anonymously so I cannot say Congrats to you directly. Who ever you were... you guessed! Bravo!

Yes my hubby and I purchased our 2nd home! It is adorable! Completely different than our home in California. I love the view to my backyard.

Hubby just arrived and we are packing for our family vacation in Lake Norris! It is beautiful weather here...loving it!

Norris Dam was the first dam built by the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority). Construction started on October 1, 1933, only a few months after the agency was created. The gates were closed on March 4, 1936 and Norris Reservoir was completely filled on January 22, 1937. The completed dam helped moderate the disasterous Ohio and Mississippi flood of 1937. The giant drum gates at the top of the spillway were raised for the first time to impound waters that would have swelled a flood more than 600 miles away. The initial cost of the project was $32,269,027

The construction of the Norris Project incurred 16,977,720 man hours of labor. During the construction 8 men lost thier lives, and 962 suffered injuries. The project relocated 2,899 families and caused the removal of 5,226 gravesites. Some of the materials used to build the dam are 1,002,300 cubic yards of concrete, and 225,889 bags of grouting for the foundation.

Norris has the largest flood control storage of any TVA dam on a tributary of the Tennessee - at normal maximum pool the reservoir holds 2,040,000 acre feet of water. Norris' two hydroelectric generators turned out the first TVA electric power in the eastern end of the Tennessee Valley and the transmission line from Norris to the Wilson dam provided the first elements of the distribution system that later spread through most of the valley and beyond.

Norris Lake extends 73 miles up the Clinch River and 56 miles up the Powell River. It has 750 miles of shoreline, and 50 miles of island shoreline giving a total of 800 miles of shoreline. The maximum width of the lake is 1.2 miles with a surface area of 34,200 acres. The watershed area for Norris Lake covers 2,912 square miles. Norris Dam is 265 feet high, and 1860 feet long and is located on the Clinch River at mile marker 79.8 in Campbell and Anderson County, Tennessee. The reservoir is 129 miles long. Norris Lake and the dam were named for George W. Norris, a U.S. Senator from Nebraska. The dam helps control floods in the area, generates electricity, and helps maintain navigation depth on the Tennessee River. Before reaching the Ohio River the water goes through nine different dams, generating electricity at each one.

Located in a ridge and valley region Norris Lake abounds in secluded coves. On these wooded banks TVA established the first demonstration public parks. Later the parks were turned over to the state of Tennessee. Recreational use of the reservoir exceeds that of any other tributary lake. TVA acquired the entire shoreline of the reservoir. Although 56,700 acres of lake land have been sold a continuous shoreline strip dedicated to public recreation has been retained, and 35,300 acres have been transferred or leased to the state of Tennessee and the various counties for public recreation. The state administers two large game management areas, three state parks, and 59 public access sites. There are three county parks. The TVA retains about 22,000 acres for future recreational development.

Lake Norris is a great place for fishing, boating, swimming, and other water sports. Nestled between East Tennessee ridges, Norris Lake points the way to Cumberland Gap and the historic wilderness trail marked by Daniel Boone. With its clear deep water, it produces excellent catches of rock fish, walleye, and bass, as well as the usual species found in other area lakes. June through September night fishing for small mouth bass, croppie, white bass and walleye is a popular activity. Two small wild areas on Norris Lake provide visitors with a mini wilderness experience. River bluff features spring and summer wildflowers and a three mile hiking trail. Hemlock bluff presents spectacular views across Norris Lake from high tree covered bluffs. Museums, scenic hiking trails, and a trail for the handicapped compliment the fine trout fishing and canoeing below the dam. A picturesque 18th century grist mill excite the imaginations of artists and historic buffs alike.

The five counties surrounding Norris Lake are Anderson County, Campbell County, Claiborne County, Grainger County, and Union County.

June gloom is the pits. July gloom is just... well gloomy. It really is a bummer to think we are entering my birthday month with weather like today. Thunderstorms? NOT my idea of a summer July in beautiful Lexington. Oh and did I tell you I was in Ohio for the 4th of July weekend? I drove into town and my heart sang. It is really beautiful here. Lexington I love you!

My Secret is about to be revealed. I am waiting 'til the fat lady sings on this one but for fun... I am giving you some random hints. If you put a few of these together you may get the right combination and know the secret. Tell me what you think it is.

Today they say it is going to get up to 94 degrees.

I love the hot weather. This weather for some may be unbearable. Being from California we love the sun and hot weather. I read this morning online that tomorrow there are thunderstorms predicted and it will only be for one day. You know that in Baker, California there is this thermometer. It is the world's largest. I wish we had one here!

This is a good thing being that the end of the week is my secret revealed and I want it to be a nice sunny day for that unveiling. Kinda like what's behind door #1!

Also my vacation will begin pronto. That means, reveal secret and head for the lake!

Ok, in all honesty that photo is a picture of the sign on the freeway in California and probably Arizona and Texas to watch for people crossing the freeway (aka border). I thought it was a perfect depiction of my husband, my son and I headed for the lake... and pronto!

For the 4th of July I spent time with my family in Ohio. It was a nice time, you know how family time is. Always great and my son loved every minute. He wanted me to let him stay there. I told him, I DON'T THINK SO! We are home now and in "let's get ready for vacation" mode.

I already know everything I need to take. I know who is going. I just need some time to get ready. With work and sewing, with the secret soon to be unveiled... I have a lot to do.

Everyone knows and loves the Sock Monkey, right? Well did you know that around 1951 The Nelson Knitting company discovered that their socks were being made to make monkey dolls. By 1953 they got into a lawsuit over design patent and finally in 1955 they were awarded the patent. So what they did was include a free pattern for the Sock Monkey Doll in each pair of socks sold. Everyone has heard or seen the Red Heeled Sock Monkey. Well he came about in 1958 when a scrap-craft magazine called Pack-O-Fun published "How to make sock monkeys". Today the sock monkey is as popular as the teddy bear. And if you are a vintage loving person, then your little one should own a Sock Monkey,
red heeled or not. The modern-ista's are making sock monkeys with all sorts of patterns now. A sock monkey with polka dot, colorful stripes, mis-matched. They are all fun and whatever makes you or your little one smile is what is important.

July always means summer to me! Hello July! Jumping up and down with joy. I am a July baby so I love July. I celebrate every day! Woohoo!

My vacation is just around the corner. So so excited about this. Can't wait to show you all the photos.
My secret will soon be revealed. Hey... I don't want to hold back, I wanna spill the beans. The blogger in me says, people like to be teased. So there! I am teasing you! WINK!

What do you love about July? I love summery food. I love tacos.

I used to have my shop on Main Street in Seal Beach, California. A great place to go have a taco and then stroll down to the pier and get some fresh air when you need a break. Sometimes during the day and sometimes in the evening. It was all very refreshing.

I've been scouting out places I might bring back that feeling (yeah well minus the walk on the pier and the smell of the ocean). I have found a place that seems to do fish tacos surprisingly well and if you like carne asada like I do... run for Clamatos. They are located at 2304 Versailles Road, Lexington-Fayette, KY 40504 (859) 260-8925. The kids will like the decor and you will enjoy the food. The burritos if you check out the veggies have a nice grill mark on them! Some people say they can drink the salsa it is so good. I like it just fine!

Can you believe June is almost gone. Today is the 30th. WOW! Time flies! My vacation is creeping up on me. So excited. But before that we have July 1st tomorrow. Welcome July!

July means a month of free summertime activity. School was out in June and doesnt start back up until September. June and September are beginning and ending months. This is why I love July and August. Nothing but summer fun. I am a July baby. My son is also a July baby. My husband and first son are both June babies. We are a summer family! Bring it on!!!

One of my Cradle Will Rock models cooking up something at home! Cooking is something that makes us all happy. As you can see here, you can be stylish while cooking your favorite meal. Yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of the surprising and untimely death of Michael Jackson. Shock and sadness were felt nationwide. I wouldn't say I was a "fan" but I will tell you that this man was certainly amazing to the music world and could dance like a genius. He was probably misunderstood, he was quite eccentric and today a year later, the legendary King of Pop is gone but never forgotten. He defines the meaning of "American Icon".

Can you believe the new iPhone is causing such a commotion? I can! I would be in line with the rest of the crazies who pre-ordered the newest baby Steve Jobs has delivered once again!

Good News! I did not succumb. You did not see me at the local hospital (called The Apple Store)

I shared with you the nest the other day... remember? Well the babies have been born. The mother is uber protective so I keep my distance. As a merchant who sells a product, I have my doors open daily and I wait for the people to come. Like Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams the saying "Build it and they will come"... I sew it and hope they love it!

I love my customers. They are so lovely, fun, crazy, energetic, gentle... I get the whole gamut. That is what makes my job fun and interesting. The personalities are so varied and interesting. Even more fun are their kids!

I make the clothing for children. Who can be more fun than a child? I love when I receive photos of your kids in my clothes! It is such a precious treat! It is why I do it. Weekends don't last long enough do they?

Email is a fun thing. You get something from someone, you open it up and then you lose yourself in the abyss called the internet. I was sent something by a friend. I thought well, that is cute. So here is what she sent me.

I found out all about Hot Browns. So you don't have to look up Wikipedia and fall into the abyss, I will tell you all that I read. Apparently the Hot Brown was originally created in Louisville, KY at the Brown Hotel in 1926.

Thanks to Fred K Schmidt we all get to enjoy that madness. It was created to serve as an alternative to a late night supper of ham and eggs.

It has been featured by TV Chef, Bobby Flay. It is sometimes called the Louisville Hot Brown or the Hot and Bubbly Brown. They even used to do a Cold Brown. I suppose when you visit Kentucky, you have to try a Hot Brown... just to say you did! And of course, you will love it!

Family!!! I am awake and hungry for breakfast. Wake up so we can go to breakfast at Ramsey's Diner!

Everyone says that I HAVE to try the Hot Brown. With hubby in town, I think we are all going to have breakfast! I finally get to experience the well talked about Hot Brown!

What is a Hot Brown? I am told it's about 1 pound of cheese, covering a white gravy, and garnished with bacon. It also has a tomato, turkey, ham and bread, but really, that stuff is irrelevant under all that cheese. The cheese was all melted, because it was, in fact, hot. But the bacon garnish hardly counts as brown.

Turkey is not brown, ham is not brown, tomato is not brown, the bread could be brown? I am told they don't use wheat bread? So where is the brown?

I hear it is very tasty. I mean the 'I Cannot Believe It's This Good' Good! Every artery in your body will be slammed shut, I hear its enough to cause one to suffer a mild stroke just looking at it! Wow I can't wait to try it!

I hear you should wash it down with some fine sweet-tea or maybe a cup of coffee to keep your heart pumping, and they have really fast and friendly service. I wonder where the brown is? I hope to find out this morning!

If there are no more posts after this, you will know that I got to go to breakfast with my family. You will know I experienced the Hot Brown and you will know I have succumb. Maybe heart stopping good. See ya on the other side!

You all know what Friday means! WEEKEND!!!

I am feeling like my vacation can't come soon enough. It's so close I can feel it already. Laying on the houseboat, sun beating on my face, the smell of tanning lotion and my ice cold coke next to me. I can hear my son playing and having a fun time. I can hear the relatives chattering about all sorts of things and me? I am in la-la land. I want the vacation to last until I feel like I am completely rested. I really need the R & R!

Today is Friday and that means the beginning of another weekend. What do you have planned? I have a few things in mind.

Okay, I have the most important things handled. Now let me share.

We will be taking vacation this summer 2010 to Lake Cumberland in Russell County!

The lake was created and completed in 1951. Can you believe it is man-made? I was surprised. It is actually a great thing because it has brought a lot of revenue ($60 mil dollars) to the county and let's be honest... it gives us people somewhere to go! Originally people did not approve of this lake. Can you believe? What were we thinking? With all the sacrifices that were made, Lake Cumberland is now the number 1 house boating destination in the United States. And I will be enjoying all that can be offered in just a little under a month! Whoo hoo!!!

and leisure boating. It is all to be had at the lake. If you don't have a house boat, the lake has cabins and condo's you can rent. They have motels or you can even camp. I want to get my "Lake" on! Bring on summer vacation and how!

My family has been planning this vacation for some time. You know how a few weeks ahead, you get the bug and start planning and buying things. Prepping for vacation is part of the fun.

Properly Display Our Flag

There is a right way and a wrong way to display the flag. The American flag should be held in the highest of regards. It represents our nation and the many people who gave their lives for our country and our flag. Here are the basics on displaying the American flag:

The flag is normally flown from sunrise to sunset.
In the morning, raise the flag briskly. At sunset, lower it slowly. Always, raise and lower it ceremoniously.
The flag should not be flown at night without a light on it.
The flag should not be flown in the rain or inclement weather.
After a tragedy or death, the flag is flown at half staff for 30 days. It's called "half staff" on land ,and "half mast" on a ship.
When flown vertically on a pole, the stars and blue field , or "union", is at the top and at the end of the pole (away from your house).
The American flag is always flown at the top of the pole. Your state flag and other flags fly below it.
The union is always on top. When displayed in print, the stars and blue field are always on the left.
Never let your flag touch the ground, never...period.
Fold your flag when storing. Don't just stuff it in a drawer or box.
When your flag is old and has seen better days, it is time to retire it. Old flags should be burned or buried. Please do not throw it in the trash.
Did you Know? There is a very special ceremony for retiring the flag by burning it. It is a ceremony everyone should see.Your local Boy Scout group knows the proper ceremony and performs it on a regular basis. If you have an old flag, give it to them. And, attend the ceremony.

Famous Flag People:
Betsy Ross was a seamstress who made clothes for George Washington. In June, 1776, Washington approached her to make the country's first flag and the rest is history.

Last night Nashville still reeling from its flooding last month, had the annual CMT Music Awards! So it was business as usual. THAT is great to see!

Music and country's best looking couple were there making us feel right at home. Who doesn't love beauty Faith Hill and her hunky husband, Tim McGraw!

This could look like an add for shoes or even ice cream but front and center is one of my little models eating ice cream in her ice cream tank dress! Perfect dress for hot summers and obviously the perfect outfit to eat ice cream in!

Did you know the first millionaire West of the Alleghenies settled right here in Lexington?

This is the house built in 1814 by John Wesley Hunt, the first millionaire west of the Alleghenies. The house features the Alexander T. Hunt Civil War Museum

The Mary Todd-Lincoln House is also right here in good ol' Lexington.

This house was completed in 1806 and occupied by the Todd family from 1932 to 1849. Mary brought her family to visit her childhood home in 1847. Her husband, Abraham, (you remember him right?)
spent hours in her father's extensive library, where he met the remarkable Henry Clay.

Being from California, the one thing I will never get is the 82 degree weather high with chance of isolated thunderstorms! Wow! This weather here is all over the board. Mother Nature touches everything so you don't miss a thing here in Lexington! I am quite sure it will feel like I am a monkey in the rainforest! Warm but wet! If its good for the rain forest it must be good for my skin!
I will think positive!

I am sewing like mad. Creating more dresses and some other fun things. I have some new things I can't wait to share!

Truth be told... the Mayfest wasn't as busy as I thought it would be but it was steady! I need to create a few (eh hem...) dresses. I was pretty cleaned out and that is a GOOD thing!

l feel energy today because the SUN is out and that always makes me feel like I can handle anything!

The sunshine is like a giant dose of vitamin C. Bring it on! Today, yes its Monday... I feel like I can fly! The other reason is because Grama is visiting!

My little boy is soooo happy! Nothing better than having Grama visit! Maybe that is why I feel so full of energy too!

Every second Sunday of each month from April through November (excluding October) the public will be provided with a police-escorted bike ride designed for all ages and levels. Each month will feature a unique route and destination, but all rides will start Downtown at Cheapside Park with the exception of the Blue Grass Airport ride in June, which will meet and take place only at the airport. Please come out and enjoy the weather, encourage healthy living, and promote a bike-friendly Lexington!

Then because we spent so much of our energy biking, I would love my family to send me to a local spa where I could unwind and decompress... and love every breathing moment!

While I was off relaxing, the family could head back to the house and relax themselves. They could shower and change so we could go see a fun, family movie together. I am looking forward to seeing Iron Man 2! It was just released Friday.

I think a nice dinner at home after the afternoon movie would be fun. I think the kids and Dad can make some great homemade spaghetti and make it with some sausage and meat sauce. Lots of parmasean cheese and some great garlic bread. Nothing beats spaghetti!

That would complete my Mothers Day 2010 in so many ways. I look forward to Sunday!

This segment is kid free. Cinco De Mayo is a day for adults to celebrate. I hope you enjoy your day and evening!

May has started off wet and stormy. Now it is drying out and just in time for a celebration.
Cinco De Mayo means lots of tacos, enchiladas, chips and salsa and of course, margaritas and mexican beer!

CLASSIC MARGARITA
Serves: 4 / Preparation time: 5 minutes / Total time: 5 minutes
1 lime, cut into wedges, divided
Coarse salt
1 cup tequila
2/3 cup fresh lime juice
1/3 cup orange-flavored liqueur
2 teaspoons superfine sugar
Rub the rim of 4 rocks glasses with a wedge of lime; dip in coarse salt. Fill the glasses three-quarters of the way with ice.
In a cocktail shaker combine the tequila, lime juice, orange-flavored liqueur and sugar. Shake well, then pour into the glasses. Garnish with lime.

FISH TACOS WITH CABBAGE AND LIME
Serves: 4 / Preparation time: 10 minutes / Total time: 25 minutes
1 pound boneless, skinless tilapia fillets, cut into 2-inch pieces
2 tablespoons olive oil
Coarse salt and ground pepper
1/4 cup regular or reduced-fat sour cream
1 lime, half finely zested and juiced, half cut into wedges
Favorite hot sauce, such as Tabasco
12 corn tortillas
1/2 small head red cabbage, thinly sliced
1 cup fresh cilantro
1 small white onion, finely chopped
Heat broiler, with rack in highest position. Pat the fish dry with paper towels and gently coat with oil on a rimmed baking sheet. Season with salt and pepper. Broil until fish is browned on top and flesh is opaque throughout, about 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine sour cream, lime zest and juice, and a few dashes of hot sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Toast corn tortillas over a kitchen burner using tongs or wrap in parchment-lined foil and heat in oven 5 minutes. Divide fish evenly among tortillas and top with cabbage, cilantro and onion. Serve with lime sour cream and lime wedges.

Well thank goodness we are going to have some time to dry out. I have a friend in Franklin, TN who said they are okay but a great many people are not so close to them. Our prayers go out to those who have been displaced by this weather. With the economy the way it is, stuff like this is enough to push you over the edge.

I am going to stop complaining about the weather. Nashville and Tennessee are experiencing the worst flooding in years. My prayers go out to them and all of those who have been evacuated!

Happy May 1st Everyone! Did you know that May Day occurs on May 1st and refers to several public holidays for many countries around the world. It is like the real labor day.

Today I feel like calling Mayday Mayday because it is horrible weather outside and doesn't she (Mother Nature) know that it is the beginning of the Kentucky Derby? I also feel compelled to take a Labor Day day off! I have had a very long week! This is what the weather is supposed to look like:

Instead we have thunder, lightning, rain... I am ready for SPRING without the showers! And no, I won't take the day off! Drats!

I spent the day selling hats with Anne Sawyer for the big event. We were at Churchill Downs and let me tell you, the hat's are GORGEOUS! Today Oprah is on a mission to stop kids (and us Adults too) from texting, twittering, facebooking, or making calls while driving!

She always focuses on doing the right thing and to make a difference! I do love that about Oprah.

Just wondering? Can I stop? Just foolin'... I do not text while driving. I actually don't even have time when I am not in my car!

I bet you didn't know that there are so many things that I love and when I choose the fabrics to make my dresses, it all speaks very loudly to me.

Take this dress for example. Cute right?

When I see this dress it makes me think of these things, just a few things I love!

And to go with that, I will need:

I definitely love my coffee and donut in the morning, almost as much as this blog! But when you drink coffee as pretty as this, it inspires you to make something fun!

This bike wheel looks fun and I know my son would love it too!
But wait... there has to be something for Mom. Yes, blue and grown up!

I Need My Coffee In The Morning!

Every morning I wake up, get myself ready, take my son to school and then I am actively seeking my Cup O' Joe!

I really enjoy having my coffee and a donut. Sometimes the donut is from Spaldings. I have talked about this before. Today I am discussing the main character of my morning which is Coffee!

I love Illy Coffee. People talk about Starbucks and no offense to them but they do not rock my coffee world. Illy Coffee is amazing.

It is about as pricey as Starbucks but oh so superior! The much cheaper version is Dunkin Donuts Coffee. Surprise Surprise, they do make a great coffee.

I am also a fan of Eight O'Clock Original. The cost of Eight O'Clock and Dunkin Donut's is far less than the more popular Starbucks Coffee. The Illy Coffee will put you out about as much as Starbucks but it is money well spent. Smooth and delicious.

The best drip coffee in town is at Magee's Bakery. They are located at 726 E. Main Street, Lexington, KY 40502 (859) 255-9481
What to love about Magee's is that they have a self service drip coffee bar that hosts 5 different kinds. The biscuits are amazing. If you like breakfast sandwiches, the Sausage Biscuit is out of this world. It's been said that it's possible that God eats these for breakfast. I think they are one of the only places who does Breakfast Casseroles. YUM! Don't get hooked on the pastries! They are known for them. They make cakes here and they are beautiful and very good. I have it on good authority that their grown up buttercream birthday cakes are 5-Star!

THE DREAMER
A movie with Dakota Fanning, Kurt Russell, Kris Kristofferson, Elizabeth Shue and more were in this! Now, if you are thinking hey that movie came out five years ago, you would be absolutely right! Five years ago I didn't reside in Kentucky, let alone Lexington!

The Dreamer was shot right here in Lexington so I am going to go rent this movie tonight!

Here is the story:
Ben Crane believes that a severely injured racehorse deserves another chance. He and his daughter Cale adopt the horse (in fact is a mare)and save it of being sacrificed by the owner. The arrival of the mare to Crane's farm, will be the perfect opportunity for both father and daughter to reconstruct their lost familiar bond. "Soñador" (Dreamer in English), the renamed mare, despite its broken leg, maybe could have another chance to return to the racecourse, with the help of Cale, Ben, and his father, Pop. In Lexington, Kentucky, the horse barn of the family Crane has been empty for years, without any horses, due to the financial difficulties of the family. When the female horse Sonya, a.k.a. Sonador (Dreamer, in English) breaks one foreleg in a race, the owner Palmer decides to sacrifice the animal, but Ben Crane accepts the injured horse as part of three months salaries owed by Palmer. It seems that I created these dresses just in time for the weather that we will be having for a week or so.

These dresses are sleeved and you can easily put on a pair of tights or leggings with this adorable dress. Wrap a knitted scarf around her neck and a little knit cap. All nice and warm yet still looking adorable like a little girl should.

What A Way To Wrap Up The Week!

Wow! We were included in the Tornado Watch for those who were effected in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama! We had Tornado Watch until 3am this morning!

So let's recount: Tsunami's, Earthquakes, Tornados, Cyclones, and Volcano's Erupting! I think this is evidence that this place where we live is ALIVE! Things happen all over the world and until it happens to us, we don't really think about it. We have had so many things happen lately, it is hard to ignore!

When the weather is a little unpredictable, like today is going to be. We will have some thunder clouds and occasional showers. There of course will be some sunshine. You can have your little girl wear this to church, put on a little hat, wrap a scarf around her neck, and have some leggings ready. This will be the perfect dress for today!

Have a great Sunday. Enjoy your family and whatever the day brings. Whether it is sunshine or thunder clouds, if you are together that is the best part of a weekend. The work week is so close already. Weekends are far too short. Enjoy today and make it last!

I Have A New Kentucky Love!

You know that feeling when you have met someone who gives you the butterflies? The feeling that you can't get enough? Well I have a new lover. Sssshhhhh don't tell my husband. He would be jealous. Why you ask? Because they don't have Smashburger in Southern California where he is working right now!

SMASHBURGER

I love their burgers and all the fixings. Its always a decision process. The fries are to die for. Can't decide if I should do regular potato or sweet potato. Take a friend and this way you can share!

These put In and Out Burgers to shame. I have a friend who says there is a TK Burger that may some stiff competition. I have yet to try. Next time I am back in California I will give it a go and see who is best.

I crave these every day now.

I love it when you stop by my store and look at all the clothes I have for sale. I have all sizes and color combinations.

What some of you may not know is this small fact: I create, sew, and produce the Cradle Will Rock line.

I sometimes feel that this is my best friend because I see it more than I see anyone!

I often wonder what inspires fabric makers to create the beautiful patterns I choose...

I love flowers and I love fabric. I hope your little girl loves both as much as I do!

Big News Day!

This morning we have a few showers but the good news is that the Kentucky Derby is just around the corner.

I read that the British jockeys who will be entering the Derby are stuck in Europe because of the volcano that is causing all sorts of havoc with the airlines. Mother Nature!

And I bet the reason the 3.3 magnitude earthquake happened in Maryville, TN is because of what is happening with our planet. Volcano's erupting, earthquakes all over the world, and now we had one close to Kentucky! Go figure! I left California thinking I left those behind but no! They are following me!

Today we are having a few showers. But the past few days have been just lovely. Beautiful sunshine, flowers a blooming, and everyone outside walking their dogs and bicycling! It makes you want to sing and laugh!

If you are going to the Derby you will need a hat. The Derby is known for hat wearing ladies. This recently famous trio escorted by one of the worlds oldest bachelors (Hugh Hefner) wearing their Kentucky Derby best!

More Beautiful April Weather!

It looks like more April weather will continue this week. Being from California, I can get used to this! Makes me love Lexington even more! The beautiful flowers that are blooming, the blue grass is prettier than ever.

We might see a stray shower or two tomorrow but with this type of weather you should be in my store buying up these summery dresses. One thing for sure is that the weather will get warmer as we head into summer.
